Farewell to Wilma (not the hurricane; the dog)

This is my first obituary of an animal. And she deserves it.

Wilma, the mascot of the Herald's late-Saturday "bulldog" edition, has passed away. She was the longtime companion of my friend Lori Durham, who manages the Herald's legal office.

Lori is a statuesque blonde. Wilma was squat and portly, and made you laugh out loud just by existing. They were inseparable, and I mourn for my friend.

As we say in dogland -may Wilma have a quick and speedy trip to the rainbow brige where she'll be waiting for Lori.
here is a an article I wrote about the loss of a heartdog.
http://www.goldenrescuesouthflorida.com/Heartdogs.htm
Why does the loss of our pets have such a big impact on us? I believe its because this is the one we tell our secrets. The dogs we confide in go to their grave knowing our deepest darkest secrets and they still love us. They never get angry. You never have to worry about what they will think of you. They greet us happily when we come from work. They watch over us at night when we sleep.

What is a heartdog? I think a heart dog is that one dog you loved more than every other dog. Some of us are blessed to have more than one during our life time. Some people have only one. This is the dog that can read of our minds. The dogs that inspire us. When these dogs die our hearts break into a thousand little pieces and we think that we will never heal.

I think the good news is this. We will always have our heartdog in our hearts. Hopefully one day we can make room for another.

and a poem
The Loss of a Heart-Dog

I stood by your bed last night,
I came to have a peep
I could see that you were crying,
you found it hard to sleep

I whined to you softly as
you brushed away a tear,
"it's me, I haven't left,
I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here"

I was close to you at breakfast,
I watched you pour the tea
You were thinking of the many times,
your hands reached down to me

I was with you at the shops today,
your arms were getting sore
I longed to take your parcels,
I wish you could do more

I was with you at my grave today,
you tend it with such care
I want to reassure you,
that I'm not lying there

I walked with you towards the house,
as you fumbled for your key
I gently put my paw on you,
I smiled and said "it's me"

You look so very tired,
and sank into a chair
I tried so hard to let you know,
that I was standing there

It's possible for me,
to be so near you everyday
To say to you with certainty,
"I never went away"

You sat there very quietly,
then smiled, I think you knew
In the stillness of that evening,
I was very close to you

The day is over,
I smile and watch you yawning
And say "goodnight, God bless,
I'll see you in the morning"

And when the time is right for you
to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you
and we'll stand, side by side

I have so many things to show you,
there is so much for you to see
Be patient, live your journey out,
then come home to be with me.
